The Durango area was once called home by ancient cliff dwellers called Anasazi. The Ute Indians then moved into the area and can still be found around Durango. The Southern Ute Indian Reservation lies just south of Durango. In 1860, gold was found and transformed Durango into a gold boom town. Twenty years later the railroad came to town and you can still enjoy a ride on the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Today Durango is primarily a recreation destination.
